Sichuan Province in Southwestern China is a truly remarkable place. It is home to towering mountains, mighty rivers, vast cities, and of course, world-famous spicy cuisine! Chances are, even if you’ve never heard of Sichuan or only have some faint idea about it, you’re familiar with the province’s most famous global export. Sichuan is home to some of the last remaining natural habitat for the giant panda. Sent to zoos around the world as part of a sophisticated breeding and conservation program, the giant pandas are a symbol of China. For travelers, autumn winds announce the arrival of spectacular colors across Sichuan Province. If you've wanted to visit, this is arguably the best time of year. But where's the best place to go? Xinduqiao in Kangding County? Yading National Reserve in Daocheng County? Are you the type to avoid large crowds? There's plenty of untrammeled wilderness in the wilds of Sichuan! Here are a few recommendations to experience the beauty of autumn in Sichuan.

Bipenggou (aka Bipeng Valley)

Spectacular Mountain Scenery

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Located approximately 145 miles northeast of the provincial capital Chengdu is Bipenggou, a natural valley set among incredible snowcapped mountains. Sometimes written as Bipeng Valley, it rises from 6,500 to over 16,000 feet above sea level. When autumn sweeps in from the Tibetan Plateau, trees throughout the valley explode in memorizing shades of red, yellow, and orange. When dusted with light, high-altitude snowfalls, this place is straight out of a fairy tale. Weather conditions remain good through the autumn months before the arrival of cold winter winds. Here you can easily enjoy hiking and backpacking or just a comfortable scenic bus tour. Once you make your way to the entrance of the nature preserve, purchase tickets and then continue on to the Shanghaizi Tourist Reception Center. Take a rest and give yourself a bit of time to acclimate to the altitude before taking transportation further up to Penyang Lake. This is a spectacular mountain lake surrounded by primitive forest, azalea flowers, and the Minjiang River. Instagram gold! Typically tours here are just day-trips so pack light with plenty of calorie-dense snacks.

Guangwu Mountain

Awash in a Sea of Red Leaves

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Guangwu Mountain is famous for its spectacular red leaves, which shade the slopes along the valley each autumn. Located roughly 285 miles northeast of Chengdu, Guangwu Mountain is named for the clouds and mist that regularly envelop the region in a tender embrace. This densely wooded scenic area is the perfect place to explore lovely valleys and mountain streams. Stretching out over nearly 500 square miles, the nature preserve contains countless places from where to view the dazzling foliage. From the right angle and with the right lighting, you can experience a glorious array of colors from blue-green rock formations to reds, oranges, and delicate yellows. To give yourself the best chance to capture the perfect shot, spend at least one night here. There are many local hotels, lodging houses, and other accommodations in nearby towns. If you come during the annual fall foliage festival expect large crowds and make sure you book well in advance.

Dongla Mountain Grand Canyon

A Remote and Enchanting Wilderness

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Tucked far up near Baoxing County, Dongla Mountain Canyon is rugged and remote. This place feels far away from just about everywhere, which is perfect for admiring the colors as they sweep down the mountain. Trees here tend to turn at different times depending on their relative altitudes and this makes for distinct sightseeing periods stretching between the season’s first frosts to late-November. Dongla Mountain’s remoteness means public transportation options are quite limited. Your best bet for exploring the area is to drive yourself or link up with a smaller, self-driving tour. Once you make it to the scenic area, there are a number of hotels and other accommodations. Take advantage of these or ones in nearby Ya’an city rather than making a 6-hour roundtrip from Chengdu. Waking up to fresh mountain streams, foliage-covered paths, and tranquil surroundings is a tonic for the soul.

Miyaluo Scenic Area

Among the Largest Fall Landscapes in China

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Miyaluo Scenic Area is a lovely and attractive destination that’s home to one of the best places to view fabulous fall foliage not only in Sichuan but all China. Each year between late-September and the end of October, frosts spur the region’s extensive maples, birches, and other tree species to don their fall attire and emblazon the many hills and valleys with fantastic colors. In addition to this lovely natural display, the region is known for its ethnic Tibetan and Qiang villages tucked deep in dense forests. Stone constructions featuring traditional defensive fortifications, watchtowers, and other structures dot the village landscapes and seem to hide among the trees. Protip: If you decide to venture here, take a detour to the Guergou Hot Spring and hotel for a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs. The water quality there is quite high so don’t be surprised to see some visitors bottling it up to take with them to drink later.

Naizigou (aka Naizi Ravine)

Brilliant the Whole Way

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Located in Heishui County, Naizi Ravine is best experienced during a brief window from mid-to-late October. The colors on display make for a fabulous fall driving tour. As you make your way from the Heishui County seat, you will experience ethereal forests, fabulous white clouds, Tibetan villages, colorful foliage, blue skies, and all the beauty of Western Sichuan Province. The 80-mile journey forms the core of a fantastic daytrip. With lots of improvements to the region’s highway and transportation infrastructure over recent years, it’s relatively easy now to traverse the region in a car. Come discover wonderful scenery along the road. It's brilliant the whole way.

Bameizhen (aka Bamei Town)

Even More a Photographer's Paradise

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

The autumn beauty stretches from early October to mid-November in Bamei Town. Located in Daofu County, Bamei sits along one of the major north-south routes linking Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous ethnic prefectures in this portion of Sichuan. If it’s true that Xinduqiao in Kangding County is a "photographer’s paradise," then it’s also true that Bameizhen surpasses even that picturesque location. Once the seat of Ganning County, Bameizhen is full of boundless plateaus, lush meadows, iconic snowcapped peaks, and ethnic Tibetan dwellings. Visitors to the region can enjoy famous scenic spots like Huiyuan Temple and the Bamei Stone Forest. Protip: When departing Bamei Town, use Route 318 to head north-south or Route 317 to venture east-west.

Baiyan Temple

Mountain Ginkgo in Far Flung Sichuan

The Best Places in Sichuan to Experience the Beauty of Autumn

Baiyan Temple is the place to visit for truly stunning ginkgo trees, which turn bright yellow in autumn. The famous ginkgo trees lining the mountain slopes in this far flung area deep in Sichuan were said to have been planted by legendary Zen Master Rujian during the Ming dynasty period. Today, visitors can tour Baiyan Temple, one of the only Tibetan Buddhist temple in this part of Western Sichuan. The temple features traditional prayer wheels as well as exquisite Indian-style stupas. The best time to visit is in mid- to late-November.
